How to Store Ground Spices So They Stay Fresh
Updated 1 September 2026
Store ground spices in airtight glass or steel jars, in a cool, dark, dry cupboard away from the stove. Most ground spices keep their best flavour for about six months to a year.
What is the best container for ground spices?
Small airtight glass or stainless steel jars are best. Smaller jars mean less air, so the spice stays fresher. Avoid clear jars on an open shelf where light reaches them.
Where should you keep spices in the kitchen?
Keep them in a cupboard away from the stove, oven and sink. Heat, steam and humidity are what make spices lose aroma and clump.
How can you tell if a spice has gone stale?
Rub a pinch between your fingers and smell it. A weak smell or a faded colour means the flavour has gone. It is not usually unsafe, but you will need to use more of it to get the same taste.
Should you keep spices in the fridge?
Not usually. Moisture from opening a cold jar in a warm kitchen makes powders clump. A cool, dark cupboard is better for everyday use.
